So you want to work as a writer from the comfort of your home? Not so fast. Before jumping into this business you should be aware of the following points as they might shock you.
Basically, your job as a ghostwriter is to give up any rights of your work to someone else who has the cash to pay for it. It’s supposed to be a win-win situation. You get money, they get the content.
Moreover, most people hate writing. The idea of sitting on your butt for long hours trying to come up with fresh ideas can drive people nuts! But that’s also good news. People who are both write excellent and like this type of work have little competition, mostly because others who try this job end up quitting – unless they are desperate.
Being professional will open more doors to you as people like that. Having a website and a business contact number can help, but are not necessary. In fact, you can get started with almost no investment.
You must be ready to understand the terms in the industry. When someone says “content writer”, it means that they want unique content for their website. Notice the word unique! It means any copied work will be flagged as plagiarism and you won’t get paid. There are tools to protect content, so my reccomendation: Don’t even think about it.
You must be ready to work like a machine, get your gears going and let it “flow”. Of course, you must know what you are talking about or your days in this business are counted! Don’t be afraid to do some research as some employers will want articles on topics you’ve never even heard about.
Tip: Write articles that contain a quick introduction that leaves the reader hanging for “more”. That way they will stay to read. Copywriters are good at this but that’s another whole new level. Copywriting both an art and a science that takes a lifetime to learn! They have to put readers in a buying state of mind, usually appealing to the emotions of the masses.
Don’t want to be a copywriter? Well then you can write articles and if you feel like doing more, then do short reports and ebooks. That way you can focus on a bigger topic and get paid more. Remember that your audience are regular folks and not literature professors. They have very little short span and will not tolerate any mumble-jumble.
Now the for the meat: If you are writing web content, keep this in mind. You are optimizing your words for search engines.
This is the general rule: content is aimed at users. Words are aimed at serach engines. It means keyword density, amount of words in an article, title and bolded words. That’s all you can control as a ghostwriter. Employers want people savvy in these skills, and if you know this stuff, you are ahead of many.
And one more thing, make sure you save the best samples of your work. Better yet, if you are just starting out, have some copies of your writing assignments from school. That will give you an edge and will get the ball rolling for you.
See, making money online as a ghost writer is not rocket science, you just have to like it -if not love it. And you have to put some work into it until the words naturally – or rather mechanically - “flow” .
